Executive Decision

I just wanted everyone to know that I've decided to move my blog over to my website. www.scorchedsilicon.com. I have thought about maintaining both sites, but between the 2 + any wiki'ing I do I'm going to go ever so slightly more insane than I already am. Not to worry readers! I do have an RSS feed that you can link to and keep up. It isn't pretty but it works just fine.

I will have my students use blogger for Globaloria functions and I will leave them feedback through my account. I just feel that after running my second generation website for nearly 3 years and having nearly 600 blog entries, that I would rather just stick to it. It is my one stop shop for everything about classes at Southern. I am making a bigger effort this time to add lots more pictures and videos to my site.

If there is anyone who wants to view all of my Globaloria entries all you have to do is either click the icon I created for the class, or click activity archive from the menu and choose Globaloria.

A Welcome to New Students

Get ready. Get set. Wait! Let's get things straight right off the bat. I rule this roost. Soldier, you're going to learn Flash this semester if I have to kill you to do it! You will learn things like animation, social networking tools, time management, and basic gaming. I hope you have your learning cap on because you'll need it. Now get ready for a good time!

The Da Game Boss...Da Game!!

Yay! Yesterday we managed to fix several bugs in the program (Thanks Patrick!). Monica's presentation and Josh wiki entries kicked much bootay! I'm glad we got the game to work so that we had a really nice demo to show off.

Bedtime Update

Just before bed I wanted to get in one last update. I inserted a ghost on the board and once the power plant touches the ghost it will now return to a fixed starting location. I just need to have a # of lives count down so that the game would end after 3 lives. Tomorrow's coding marathon is looking pretty good.

Minor Update

I managed to get a sound to play during the hittest between the power plant and the mountain. It works and shows that I could also implement a power up dot effect. Now that I know how to link sounds in I'm going to work on reducing the amount of code I'm writing. The way I have it now if there were 100 mountains I would perform an individual check on each one. I've got to figure out a way of basically making the mountains the exact same. That way 1 change affects all of them and I don't have to re-code each one every time.

Almost a game!

I managed to get a wv map outline and put in a few barriers. I'm sooo happy I managed to get the power plant to stay within the barriers (mostly) and gobble up a few mountains. All I need to do now is figure out how to get the baddies to run around and then how to use power ups.

More Progress

Ugh. So horrible but it works and I can live with it. I figured out how to have the power plant hit the mountains and have them score and then disappear from the screen. It is a take off of the carrot being moved. I'll have to do this with each instance of the mountain, which could be 50 or more. I need to learn arrays but I am really struggling here. I posted my work to the wiki as usual. Man I really don't like posting things that aren't better, but ya gotta learn somehow I suppose.

Progress

Well I managed to get the power plant to move around a craptastic pac man board. It does stay within the confines of the borders (most of the time). I figured out that I need to make the walls thicker and the spaces wider, but the basic functionality is there.

I also have figured out how to make the mountain invisible once the power plant collides with it. Unfortunately I couldn't pull it off in the same flash file that I managed to get the power plant to run around in. It keeps passing below it as if it isn't on the same stage. I'll figure it out eventually.

So the basics are there I just need to learn how to put them together. I've found a few ways to do a pac man like game and I could just snag the code, but it is so cryptic that I can't understand it even after years of programming. My god I hate the people who created the flash language right now.

Both of my demos I have posted to the wiki.

Graphics

I finished all the graphics for the game. I will have them posted to the wiki shortly.

Slowly but surely.

I'm just now getting to where I can spend time blogging and adding materials for my classes. I wanted to share a program I found that will make life a lot easier. It is called wiki2xhtml and can be found over at SourceForge for free!. I can stand wiki code. I have enough languages in my life and don't need to know another. Since I already know html this handy little utility will take the code I write and change it over to wiki. This will make life so much more simple.

Day 1 - In the begining there was Blogger

Today was the begining of my experiences with Globaloria. Right now I'm just getting the site setup and some links added. My goal is to add at least 10 links to Flash tutorials by the end of the day. I'm also adding links to my blog roll as well as some RSS feeds.
